While over 100 more teachers are expected to retire from the civil service by the end of the year, the Education Minister believes that the voluntary redundancy policy to be implemented soon will not affect the education sector.

While commenting on government's voluntary redundancy package to be implemented from January next year, Bole said that the Education Ministry is currently well staffed and they do not have to make any staff redundant.

Bole's comments come after Public Service Commission (PSC) stressed that plans are now in the pipeline to make 5,000 civil servants redundant by January 2010.

The redundancies will be voluntary and they will target civil servants who are between the ages of 52 to 54 years.

Meanwhile, since the implementation of the compulsory retirement policy, 2235 civil servants have retired, 240 of these vacant positions have been filled through re-engagement and while 435 teachers have been newly appointed to replace retired teachers, 1560 positions have been frozen.
