The Fiji Chamber of Commerce President Swani Maharaj has called for a legislation to be put in place which will give more protection to people who have taken housing loans from banks.

Maharaj made the comment in his presentation at the World Consumers Day in Suva yesterday, where he highlighted that some bank fees and charges on loans are unfair on customers.

He added it is also worrying to see that sometimes people are left with no option when they cannot fully pay a loan, although they may have paid off a substantial amount.

Maharaj said that it is also unfair on new small micro enterprises borrowing money for properties.

However, Association of Banks in Fiji President Greg Watson said banks in Fiji do not have the freedom to set these charges as it is a directive from the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
