As the world is celebrating World Diabetes Day today, it has been revealed that more and more people are suffering from diabetes in Fiji.

The statistics collected by the Health Ministry shows that more indo-Fijians suffer from diabetes compared to Fijians.

The Medical officer for World Health Organisation in Fiji, Doctor Lee Den said Diabetes rate in Fiji is severe when compared to other countries in the world.

He said people from 25 to 64 years old age suffer from diabetes however the problem is that when diabetes is recognised, it is not well controlled and this problems lies with Indo-Fijians more compared to Fijians.

The survey shows that more people have diabetes in the urban areas compared to rural areas as urban people more depend on junk and fatty food, consume less fruit and vegetables and do not have the right dietary intake.

Dr Den said people get diabetes due to many reasons which is hereditary, obesity, overweight, lack of exercises, smoking a lot and drinking excessive alcohol.
