More locals will be employed as soon as the construction of two new bridges along the Kings Road begins this month.

This is after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the government and the contractor China Railway 5th Group Company this week.

Ministry of Works, Transport and Public Utilities Acting Principal Media Officer Iliesa Sokia said the $9 million project will see the construction of the bridges which is 100 meters long at Naqia in Tailevu and Wainiboa near Rakiraki and this is part of the ongoing Nayavu to Rakiraki road works under the Fiji Road Upgrading Project.

Sokia said the Department of National Road put out a public tender for the construction of the two bridges for companies both local and overseas but was awarded to the China Railway Group.

Sokia added the China based contractor has proved itself following construction works around the country with their latest project was the multimillion dollar Navuso Bridge in Naitasiri.

The construction works will take 15 months to complete.
