Attorney General and Communications Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has raised concern that despite being a member of the International Telecommunication Union since May 1971, Fiji has not taken advantage of its membership.

Sayed-Khaiyum and Telecommunication Authority of Fiji chairperson Mere Vuniwaqa are attending the 5th World Telecommunications Development conference in Hyderabad, India organized by the International Telecommunication Union.

This event is organized every four years to consolidate the universal effort in advancing telecommunications and connecting the unconnected throughout the world.

Sayed-Khaiyum said their aim now is to get more involved in the rapidly changing telecommunication sector and strengthen Fiji's presence worldwide.

More than 1,000 delegates from 142 countries are attending the conference and issues such as spectrum management, digital broadcasting and broadband are expected to be discussed in the two week event.
