Many strong, healthy people and landowners are applying for monthly poverty allowance from the welfare department because they feel it is there for them.
FCOSS executive director Hassan Khan believes that not enough information is given out by ministry officials and no proper checks done to individuals to determine whether he or she is eligible for the assistance.
Social Welfare Minister Dr Jiko Luveni said they do not want Fiji to become a social welfare society and people must work for their survival, and young people must explore other options for employment and not be dependent on government alone.
