More commitment and resources must be committed into preventing the high number of suicide cases in Fiji.

The Young People's Concerned Network's acting president Peter Waqavonovono said suicide is the highest cause of deaths amongst youths today than any other disease, and should be of a concern to everyone.

Figures gathered from the Fiji Police and the Health Ministry show that 120 persons committed suicide in 2007, and what is even more worrying is that 2008 figures rose by 98 with 218.

We are just five months into 2009 and the suicide cases for this year is already 88.

Waqavonovono said that it is time for a refocus on resources and energies to combat suicide and to also relook at suicide and ending the taboo or silence surrounding the killer.
