Lesser cane was left standing in the fields in Labasa compared to last year after crushing ended at the Labasa Mill.

The Chief Executive Officer of Fiji Sugar Corporation Deo Saran said that stand over cane this year was around 10,000 tonnes compared to 12,490 tonnes in the previous season.

He said that Labasa mill crushed 679,597 tonnes of cane and made 55,600 tonnes of sugar whereas last year only 51,340 tonnes of sugar was produced.

Saran said that 2009 season was a difficult one for Labasa Mill as well as Lautoka and Rarawai mills as the mills faced considerable operational difficulties mainly due to issues related to commissioning of the new plant installed under the Mill Upgrade Program.

He said that these problems have been identified and the FSC will be attending to these during the slack season and expects a smoother season.
