More than 20 whales and dolphins have been seen in Levuka Waters.

This has been confirmed by the Principal Fisheries Research Officer of the Fiji Department of Fisheries, Aisake Batibasaga after a three weeks survey.

Batibasaga said 22 whales and dolphins were sighted which is an increase since the Fiji government declared the waters of Fiji a whale sanctuary in 2003.

He said 238 humpback whales were seen in 1950's however the number started decreasing but compared to 2002 and 2003 surveys, an increase has been seen.

The Research Team led by David Paton from Blue Planet Marine undertook the survey in the Lomaiviti waters to compare current numbers with that sighted during a survey conducted 50 years ago.

Batibasaga said the Interim government is working on drafting a Management Plan to conserve these species which are not only important culturally but also have the potential for tourism opportunities within Fiji.
