Modern farming is needed in the Northern Division so that farmers can also focus on other cash crops apart from cane farming.
Labasa Chamber of Commerce, Vice President Satish Kumar said young farmers need to be educated as the government is working hard with the Native Lands Trusts Board to renew land leases and stop people from moving to other parts of the country.
He believes they are also encouraging those sugarcane farmers to return to the North who have left Northern Division to settle in other parts of the country after their land leases expired.
He adds dry weather has also affected cane farms.
