Mixed results in Day 1 of Mini Games
While the Netball team started their campaign well with a 58-32 win against Tonga the results from bowling and tennis did not go in Fiji's favour.
In Netball, Fiji led in all of the 4 quarters of the game and enjoyed a 27-17 lead at halftime.
It was Coach Unaisi Rokoura's first taste of the game at a higher level and the girls did not let her down as they dominated possession to remain favorites.
The Fiji Women’s bowling team had a close 2-1 loss to the host Cook Islands but the men’s team defeated Niue 2-0 to keep their gold medal chances alive.
In tennis, Chris Hargrove and Devaskar Reddy started well to beat their Tongan opponents.
They will now progress to the second round where they are expecting tough competition from New Caledonia and Samoa.
Men’s table tennis Fiji defeated Tonga 9-0.
A lot of expectations rest on the athletics where Fiji is aiming for 15 gold medals.
Makelesi Bulikiobo and Niko Verekauta are expected to bring 10 gold medals as they have entered in 5 events.
Meanwhile, Team Fiji's Kolinio Qarau has won his opening event in the men's Octathlon event.
He came first in his heat and will now compete in the men's Octathlon long jump and later in the 400 meters.
The Coke Games gold medalist in the girl’s 3000 meters event, Sereima Liku will be hoping to continue with her winning style and get the gold from the Pacific Mini Games.
Liku will be the only Team Fiji athlete in action today for the medal playoffs. She will run in the women’s 5000 meters final at 3:40pm.
Competition is also underway in Squash, Lawn Bowling and Golf on the first day of the Pacific Mini Games in Cook Islands.
