The decision to set the legal marriage age at 18 has received mixed reactions from church organizations and the public.
The Sanatan Dharam Prathinidhi Sabha of Fiji General Secretary Kamal Sharma said parents and guardians will now have to see that their children are mature enough by the age of 18.
Meanwhile, The Latter Day Saints Church National Director of Public Affairs and the President of Fiji Council of Social Services, Nemani Buresova said the legal marriage age of 18 will help reduce Pre-marital sex.

Cabinet has approved the amendments and therefore any person below the age of 18 years, whether male or female, will be prohibited from contracting a valid marriage.
In the previous law, girls could get married at 16 with parental consent and parental consent was needed for those who were below the age of 21 and wanted to get married.
