The Health Ministry is in the process of de-centralizing basic and early detection services for non communicable diseases, namely cancer.
Minister Doctor Neil Sharma made this revelation at the Health Symposium addressing participants on the aim the Ministry has taken in the last eighteen months.
Dr Sharma said that with the funding from the Cancer Society and the World Health Organisation, they have been able to set up a Cancer Prevention Unit and have identified two hospitals for important equipment.
According to the Fiji Cancer Society for 2008 there were a total of 455 new cases while there were 459 deaths recorded due to cancer.
The Health Symposium is currently being held at the Fiji School Medicine and will end tomorrow.
