The current membership of the Land Transport Authority Board needs to be replaced.

This is one of the major recommendations made by Ministry of Justice and Anti-Corruption in the report on the LTA industry to Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Praveen Bala today.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the replacement of the LTA Board is to instill confidence in the LTA as an institution and allow for the recommendations made in this report to be implemented effectively.

He said a number of complaints were made against the LTA Board, in particular the composition, meetings and processes of the Board.

Sayed-Khaiyum said they recommend that the Legal Framework be reviewed by the Review Committee that will be appointed by the Minister for Transport.

Sayed-Khaiyum said a large number of complaints were also received regarding the efficiency of LTA services and they are recommending that a specific Complaints Unit be established for 1 year to attend to complaints.

He said the Complaints Unit must operate independently of LTA management, and should report directly to the Minister for Transport.

The Attorney General also said another recommendation they are making is that the current requirement of obtaining base permits be totally removed for taxis to allow all taxi operators to operate from any base which is designated in any municipal council or rural local authority.

He said that the law needs to be amended to facilitate the removal of taxi bases.

Fijivillage asked Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Praveen Bala on what’s his first step after receiving the report.
