The Ministry of Health and Colgate Palmolive are organising a “Hand Washing Day for 2010” on October 15th.
The Global Hand Washing Day was first initiated in 2008 by the Global Public Private Partnership for Hand washing with Soap.
It has also been endorsed widely by governments, international institutions, civil society, NGOs, private companies and individuals around the globe.
The 2nd annual Global Hand washing Day was celebrated in more than 80 countries on October 15th, 2009.
Although people around the world wash their hands with water, very few wash their hands with soap.
More hand washing with soap means lower rates of infectious disease.
The Ministry of Health is calling on interested stakeholders and individuals to be part of the committee to organise the day and ensure that Fiji gets into the Genius Book of Records by having the largest number of people washing hands at the same time at the same place on October 15th, 2010.
South Africa is the current champions with 1,800 people recorded last year.
