The Sugar Ministry said talks are underway with landowners to renew more agriculture land leases so that more sugarcane is planted in the near future.
Permanent Secretary Parmesh Chand said non-renewal of expired land leases is also a major contributing factor for low production of cane.
This follows the latest report by the Reserve Bank of Fiji, which shows decline in sugar export by 21% compared to 41% growth for the same period last year.
Forecast for this year on export earnings for sugar following the devaluation of Fijian dollar is $280 million.
