The Ministry of Education will now assess schools annual budgets in relation to their overall activities, after concerns were raised about exorbitant school levies.

Minister Filipe Bole said this action will now be taken to ensure transparency and that levies are reasonable and fair.

He said it will not be fair if the Ministry is assisting the parents and students with free tuition, textbooks and bus fares, while schools take advantage of this by increasing their levies.

He said the Ministry wants every child to have an opportunity to education, and this is all part of Ministry's effort to reduce the costs of education.

Bole had earlier this year commented that schools charging higher levies will have to face a reduction in the grant it gets from the Ministry.
