Fiji imports a total of $350 million worth of food items annually and the Agriculture Ministry is hoping to bring this figure down with their Import Substitution program.
Permanent Secretary Colonel Mason Smith said a lot of the agriculture produce that is imported from overseas can be grown locally and they have identified areas where the programs can be successfully carried out.
Col Smith said their program is on schedule despite setbacks caused by Cyclone Tomas.
