Ministry Working on Contingency Plan in Event of Strike
The Education Ministry is currently working on the contingency plans to ensure that children's education is not affected by the planned strike of the members of the Fijian Teachers Association.
Interim Education Minister Netani Sukanaivalu said the issue was discussed in the cabinet meeting yesterday and he is having further talks with the ministry officials today.
Interim Public Service Minister Poseci Bune has revealed that if many teachers walk out of classrooms from some schools then the students will be shifted to nearby schools.
The exact details of the plan on how it will work will be revealed just days before August 2nd when the FTA members go on strike.
Meanwhile, the FTA believes that the interim government's contingency plan will only work in some areas.
Acting FTA General Secretary Pita Delaibatiki said that one has to understand that most of their members are teaching in the rural and remote areas while others are in the outer islands and it will be difficult to move children from one school to another if FTA members go on strike.
Delaibatiki added that they have also met with the school management where the FTA members are teaching.
The FTA members want the 5 percent pay cut to be restored by next month.
