The Ministry of Health is taking steps to ensure it is able to hire an adequate number of doctors to be based in major hospitals and health centers around the country by next year.
Interim Minister Dr. Jiko Luveni admits that there is a serious shortage of doctors in Fiji and they expect the necessary funds to be allocated in the 2009 Budget to enable them to hire more doctors.
Dr. Luveni also said that they believe that the reason nurses continue to leave for greener pastures is due to the work load on nurses in major hospitals around the country. She said they also intend to address the problem by employing around 100 nursing graduates by next year.
