The Local Government Ministry remains firm on the Interim Cabinet's decision that all town and city mayors and councilors will have to vacate their office by end of next month.
Permanent Secretary Ram Chandar said they will respond directly to the Commonwealth Local Government Forum who have urged the interim government to reconsider its decision not to extend the term of all elected councilors past 31st January 2009 and to prohibit further council meetings, without any arrangements in place of new elections.
Chandar added the decision is final.
Meanwhile, Fiji Local Government Association president Ratu Peni Volavola said they are looking at some options so that they continue with their work after the end of next month.
Ratu Peni refused to reveal details on what their options are.
It’s also unclear when the local government elections will be held.
The town clerks will oversee all operations of the town and city councils after 31st January till elections are held.
