The private sector would suffer drastic consequences if the national minimum wage is increased to $4.36 an hour as proposed by the trade and public sector unions.
Fiji Retailers Association President Himmat Lodhia said such moves could force many operators to close up and take their business elsewhere.
The Footwear Clothing and Textile Councils Executive Member Mark Halabe shares similar sentiments and stressed that the garment industry will not be able to survive if the minimum wage is increased to such an amount.
The Fiji Islands Council of Trade Union and the Fiji Public Service Association have confirmed that they will make fresh submissions to increase the minimum wage between around $4.36 to $5 an hour.
