The mineral resources sector in Fiji is set to boom with three companies to become the first to be issued deep sea exploration and mining licenses within Fiji waters.
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Netani Sukanaivalu revealed to Fijivillage that three companies will explore mineral deposits on the boundaries of Fiji’s exclusive economic zone.
Sukanaivalu said they are taking their queue from Papua New Guinea which is the leading nation in deep sea explorations which is set to rake in millions of dollars for Fiji.
The number of exploration work and mining lease applications rose significantly in 2008 and 2009 amounting to more than FJ$25m in exploration expenditure and last year, the Ministry generated $14m from legally known quarries.
