The Chairman for the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority believes people will take advantage of the tax amnesty period to clear off their outstanding taxes.
Filipe Bole said in the past years, millions of dollars worth of taxes were recovered and on the other hand many taxpayers benefitted.
Cabinet on Tuesday endorsed this tax amnesty. In a press conference yesterday, Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry highlighted that they hope to collect $162 million in outstanding taxes through the amnesty period.
Chaudhry also revealed that the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority will soon embark on an exercise to crack down on several businesses which are not registered with the tax department.
FIRCA will undertake the tax amnesty from 15th October to 16th November 2007. The amnesty period will be extended further if the need arises.
