Labasa, Nadi and Rakiraki towns are now flooded and the Military and Police teams are currently trying to rescue people from their homes in the Labasa area after the Labasa river broke its banks at around 9:30 this evening.
Police Spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed that despite the people are now moving and are taking their belongings with some carrying babies.
Sokomori it is disappointing that people in Labasa failed to heed the warnings to evacuate earlier.
Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu confirmed that several areas in Labasa and on the outskirts are now flooded and over 200 people are now taking shelter at the evacuation centers in Labasa.
Sokomuri confirmed some people are stranded and are in need of assistance to get to safety.
He confirmed that there is no electricity in Labasa area.
Sokomori said over 400 people are now taking shelter at 9 evacuation centers.
Meanwhile, a family in Qawa, Labasa is calling for help after the flood waters entered their house in the last hour.
A resident Kiran Lata said there house is situated near Qawa River and they did not move out because there house did not get flooded previously.
There are five members in the family who cannot move out because they are surrounded by water.
Flood waters from the Korotari River have now entered about 12 houses.
A resident, Sarda Nand said people are now facing difficulties moving out of the house.
He said they have lost everything and they are now taking shelter at their neighbor’s house.
According to Nand the water level is rising at a dramatic rate.
