The Australia government said that the re-introduction of emergency rule in Fiji shows that the military regime cannot run the country.

Speaking to Radio Australia, Australian Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander Downer said that that move demonstrates that the Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama does not understand the political process.

Downer has called for the return of democracy in Fiji, saying that there is no popular support for the regime.

Downer said that Commodore Bainimarama has never really successfully justified the reason for the coup, which he said is illegal.

He also claims that Commodore Bainimarama is not finding it possible to run the country properly and as a result the economy is sliding down.

Downer also told Radio Australia that people are suffering and living standards are starting to fall in Fiji. The Australia Foregin Affairs Minister also claims that all Commodore Bainimarama has done is bring sorrow to Fiji.
