There has been a late change to the New Zealand Rugby Sevens men's squad for the Rio Olympics, with Teddy Stanaway ruled out through injury.
Stanaway injured his hand in a warm‑up game against the United States last week and has failed to pass a fitness test.
He has been replaced by Lewis Ormond and former All Black Liam Messam has been put on standby and is on his way to Rio.
Coach Sir Gordon Tietjens says it was devastating for Stanaway.
Messam will stay outside the Olympic Village while on standby.
New Zealand is in Pool C with Great Britain, Kenya and Japan.
Meanwhile, the Fiji men’s 7s side will take on Brazil in their first Rio Olympics pool game at 4.30am next Wednesday, they will then face Argentina at 9.30am before taking on USA at 4.30am next Thursday.
The quarterfinals will start at 8am next Thursday, the semis will start at 5.30am next Friday and the final will kick off at 10am next Friday.
The Rio Olympics opening ceremony will start at 11am this Saturday.
