The Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU) said the declining number in union membership, while worrying, is nothing new.
General Secretary Attar Singh said there needs to be a concerted effort by all the relevant stakeholders to increase the numbers, not just the unions.
These comments come after Interim Labour Minister Lek Ram Vayeshnoi reportedly said that only 30 percent of the formal sector was unionized adding that he hope the Employment Relations Promulgation 2007 would allow healthy competition among unions to unionize the unorganized sector.
Vayeshnoi made the comments at the 42nd FTUC Biennial Conference in Nadi yesterday.
