The Fiji Media Council agrees with the US Report on Human Rights Abuses in 2008 in Fiji.
Chairman Daryl Tarte said the US government's observation that the interim government did not fully respect freedom of speech and press in Fiji, is correct.
The report stated that the constitution provides for freedom of speech and of the press, but the interim government did not fully respect these rights in practice, citing incidents where reporters were called before the courts, detained for questioning, sued and deported.
