The Fiji Media Council is expected to have an emergency meeting this hour to discuss about cabinet's decision yesterday to approve the formation of a Media Tribunal under the proposed Media Promulgation.

Chairman of the Fiji Media Council Daryl Tarte said he was shocked about this decision and called an emergency meeting with council members to discuss the matter.

The interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the proposed Independent Tribunal will be an avenue where people will be able to appeal the Fiji Media Council's decision on complaints.

However, Daryl Tarte said the interim Attorney General, at their meeting on Wednesday, told them something different from what came out yesterday.

The proposed Media Promulgation will see all existing laws pertaining to the Media, its freedom and restrictions professional standards and code of ethics incorporated into it with the establishment of an independent tribunal.

Sayed-Khaiyum stresses it is still just a proposal and the interim government will consult all the media outlets and stakeholders about it.
