However many Hindus stop it two days before the festival.
The Secretary for the Shri Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Vijen Prakash said prayers are performed during Diwali which is why the house and the body is kept clean to appease the Goddess of Wealth.
Meanwhile, today is small Diwali meaning the Goddess of Wealth will be worshipped and offered new clothes and ornaments by the women.
This afternoon, Hindus will light a diya for the God of Death and pray that no one has an unexpected death in the family for the whole year.
Prayers will be performed in shops and offices tonight and tomorrow by families owning businesses.
Many people will buy any silver kitchen utensil today as it is believed that buying a new utensil also brings prosperity.
People buy new clothes for Diwali as a reminder that a new day and life will start for them.
During such time, the businessmen close their books of old accounts and start new ones.
This denotes the giving up of bad habits and cultivating new attitudes.
Fireworks, new clothes and sweets make Diwali the most eagerly awaited festival of the year.
It is also traditional to invite close family members and friends over for sweets, lunch or dinner during the days of Diwali.
