Only hours after his client was sentenced to life imprisonment, Simon McCartney's lawyer Sevuloni Valenitobua filed the necessary documents in the Fiji Court of Appeal to appeal against the conviction and sentence.
Valenitobua told Fijivillage that he was instructed by his client to take immediate steps soon after the verdict was delivered on Wednesday to appeal the sentence as McCartney maintained his innocence.
35-year-old Simon McCartney was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Suva High Court for manually strangling his 29-year-old wife Ashika Lata McCartney in Deuba last year.
Judge Justice Daniel Gounder while sentencing McCartney ordered that he serve a minimum of 18 years in prison.
He was found guilty by all five assessors.
