A massive country-wide campaign will now be undertaken to ensure that all the eligible voters register to vote when the Electronic Voter Registration commences in the next few weeks.

The government is seeking to utilize all mainstream media outlets in their effort to encourage voter registration as it is no longer compulsory to register or vote.

Under the previous system, it was compulsory to vote in the general elections and those that did not vote faced a fine of $20.

Minister for Elections and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that they need to appeal to the people through the media to get all Fijians to understand that it is their right to vote.

Electronic voter registration is expected to be launched on the 29th of this month.

More than 1,100 voter registration clerks will carry out the process with Canadian company, CODE INC.

380 electronic kits will be used.

They are worth $3.9 million.

Sayed-Khaiyum earlier confirmed that $9 million will be used for the electronic voter registration process.
