A 32yr old man has been taken into Police custody for allegedly raping a 22yr old school teacher over the weekend.

The alleged incident took place in a settlement outside Lautoka.

Divisional Crime Officer Western, ASP Luke Rawalai said the teacher attended her school management party on Friday night and took off to a night club later with some friends.

On her way back to her home she was confronted by the suspect, who took her to a cassava patch and allegedly raped her.

The suspect is also alleged to have assaulted the victim in the process.

The teacher reported the matter to Police soon after the alleged incident and Police managed to locate the suspect on Saturday.

The man is expected to be charged later today. 

Meanwhile, police arrested 16 people in Sigatoka yesterday for allegedly breaching the Public Emergency Regulation.

Divisional Crime Officer Western, ASP Luke Rawalai confirms the 16 were conducting a meeting at a school without a permit.

They were taken to the Sigatoka Police Station for questioning and have been released.

Rawalai is urging members of the public to seek approval from police if they are intending to conduct public meetings.
