Man gets 5 years for manslaughter
The court heard that on 27th April 2008, Setefano Nausu attacked Krishna Kumar and his wife Sarojni Lata in Colo-i-suva while they were delivering bread to villagers in the area.
While their vehicle was parked at a village, Nausu snatched $30 from a container inside the vehicle and fled.
Kumar gave chase however Nausu managed to escape after assaulting him and he returned moments later and threw a stone at Kumar's vehicle.
The stone smashed through the glass and hit Lata on her head. Lata was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
After the incident, Nausu then flagged down a taxi, assaulted the driver, grabbed his mobile and then fled the scene.
High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar noted that Nausu has 8 previous convictions and said that he is not entitled to any credit for good character and his conduct calls for a deterrent sentence.
Judge Goundar said that Nausu has been persistent in his criminal pursuit and shows total disregard for the safety of citizens who are public service providers.
