A man found in possession of a bag full of marijuana has been sentenced to 8 years imprisonment by High Court judge Justice Daniel Gounder.

33-year-old Kini Sulua was caught by police with 5,203.3 grams of marijuana wrapped in a cloth and plastic bags on April 10th this year, after police searched the carrier he was travelling in from Tabuarua settlement in Navosa to Sigatoka town.

Judge Gounder noted that Sulua, who has two children aged 1 month and 3 years, broke down in tears during mitigation and sought forgiveness from the courts and despite two minor convictions he was treated as a person of good character while considering the sentence.

However, Justice Gounder stressed that the quantity of drugs is significant and was for commercial purposes with the objective to derive profit.

The judge also ordered that the drugs be destroyed by police within 14 days and a report be presented in court to verify this.
