Man Jailed For 13 Years For Rape
The man is alleged to have committed this act at an evacuation centre in Vunidawa.
The 20yr old appeared in the Nausori Magistrates court and was told to report to Vunidawa Police Station on every Wednesday and Saturday between 6am to 6pm. He has also been ordered not to interfere with witnesses. However no plea has been taken and he has been ordered to arrange a lawyer for himself. The matter has been adjourned to the 2nd of February.
In light of this incident Police are now monitoring evacuation centres to ensure people are safe.
Divisional Police Commander Eastern, SSP Emosi Baleinuku said that people's privacy is paramount and should be respected.
Meanwhile, the 39yr old man charged for raping his 16 year old sister in law two years ago was jailed for 13 years today by High Court Judge, Justice Isikeli Mataitoga.
The court heard that the three assessors found the 39yr old guilty of two counts of rape and one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm.
The 39yr old, between the 2nd June and 10th December 2007, raped his 16 year old sister- in -law and was also beaten by the accused.
He pleaded not guilty however Justice Mataitoga sentenced him to 13 years.
