A 30-year-old and former Programmer with Telecom Fiji Limited escaped custodial sentence after he pleaded guilty to an unlawful possession of an illicit drug.

Ilisoni Naigulevu on the 3rd March last year in Suva without lawful authority possessed 0.8 grams of Cannabis, an illicit drug.

A Police officer saw Naigulevu buy something wrapped in a foil from another person in Usher Street he later found 2 rolls of dried leaves.

Naigulevu told the court that he bought the marijuana for his cousins after watching a rugby game.

Meanwhile, Justice Daniel Gounder while passing sentence said he made an order of conditional discharge under Section 44 of the Penal Code, where he does not have to commit any offence in the next 12 months.

Judge Gounder told Naigulevu that he has a decent job and he earns an annual salary of $22,000 so a conviction will tarnish a good record.

Judge Gounder ordered that the drugs be destroyed within 14 days.
