2014 Fiji Sportsman of the Year Meli Malani is expected to arrive in the country on Thursday to join the Fiji Swimming team for the Oceania Swimming Championship this month.

The 19-year-old Meli Malani is currently training at Spire Institute in Ohio, America and will be training with the other 27 swimmers when he arrives.

National Team Manager David Eyre says Malani will be competing in the men’s 50m Freestyle and he will try to make the Olympic qualifying time of 22.89 seconds.

Malani and 20-year-old Matelita Buadromo are the favourites from Fiji to qualify for the Olympics.

Buadromo who has just returned from the Australian Institute of Sports for 3 weeks of training will be competing in the women’s 200m Freestyle.

Her personal best is 2 minutes 5 seconds and she is trying to make the Olympic qualifying time of 2 minutes 3 seconds.

A total of 15 countries in the Pacific including Australia and New Zealand will be competing in the 2016 Oceania Swimming Championship from the 19th to the 26th of this month at the Damodar Aquatic Centre.
