The Public Service Commission said the possibility of making Civil Servants redundant is still an option if they fail to achieve their aim to reduce the civil service numbers by 10 percent next year.

PSC Chairman, Rishi Ram has confirmed the step can be taken next year if they fail to scrap two thousand positions from the civil service.

Ram adds they already have managed to de-establish one thousand positions in the Civil Service this year without making workers redundant and this will save the Government 20 to 25 million dollars which will reflect in the upcoming National Budget.

However Ram said their aim is to reduce the number of civil servants by another 1000 in 2009 and they are keeping their options open.
