A major split has emerged between developing countries at the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen over the best way to help the most vulnerable countries.

The small island states and poor African nations, want any deal to contain stricter conditions that those agreed on in Kyoto in 1997.

The group includes the Cook Islands, Barbados and Fiji as well as the poor African nations of Sierra Leone and Senegal.

Calls have also been made for developing nations to be legally bound by carbon emission cuts, however Chinese negotiators have called on the United States to increase its emission targets.

However, US Negotiator Todd Stern said while they recognize their contribution to carbon emissions, putting the blame solely on them is uncalled for.
