Major developments to boost the dairy industry in Fiji is expected tomorrow when Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama meets with the Rewa Dairy Cooperative Board and farmers.
As the first ever Food Symposium got underway at the Novotel Hotel in Lami this morning, statistics provided by the government highlight that since 2004, milk imports have increased from $39.4 million to $62.5 million in 2008 while production at Rewa dairy decreased from 11.77 million liters to 10.33 million liters as the number of registered farmers decreased.
To address this issue, Commodore Bainimarama revealed that urgent steps will be taken to increase milk production in Fiji.
Addressing the over 300 stakeholders at the symposium, Commodore Bainimarama also revealed that steps are now being taken by the government and stakeholders in the poultry industry to try and ensure that those in the low income bracket in Fiji are able to afford quality chicken products at cheap prices.
He said more competitive prices will be implemented to achieve this goal.
