People in Sigatoka are facing major environmental and health threat as the sewerage pipe that was running on the old Sigatoka Bridge broke on Sunday and human waste is now entering the river.
Sigatoka Provincial Administrator Kaliova Bainivalu confirms the bridge received extensive damage because of heavy flooding and the pipe broke as a result.
Bainivalu said they are working with the Public Works Department to repair the pipe as soon as possible.
Bainivalu is urging members of the public to refrain from using the Sigatoka River for the mean time as the waste could be harmful to their health.
