Former Red Rock player Jone Macilai who played for the Northland club showcased his talent in the New Zealand Provincial 7s last week which caught the eye of Sir Gordon Tietjens and has named him in his tournament team.

The New Zealand 7s coach said there were a number of young players including Macilai who impressed him and now the challenge for them is to back it up at the Bayleys National Sevens.

Auckland beat Taranaki 26-5 in the final of the Provincial 7s.

Meanwhile, the national sevens rugby extended squad will march into camp today.

Team manager Paula Biu said the players have been following their training programme in the Christmas break.

Coach Ben Ryan earlier said that player’s fitness is the first thing he will assess.

Fiji is pooled with New Zealand, Australia and Scotland for the USA 7s which will be held from the 24th to the 27th of this month while the New Zealand 7s will be held on the 7th and 8th of next month.
