All Blacks captain Richie McCaw will be on the bench for the Crusaders for their sudden death Super Rugby playoff in Christchurch against the Queensland Reds.

The 32 year old loose forward, who is yet to play Super Rugby this season after taking time away from the game, turned out for his Christchurch club side last weekend and played 80 minutes.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder still has the option of using Luke Whitelock in case of an early injury to a loose forward rather than pitch in McCaw, who despite his vast experience and mental toughness, will still be short of match fitness after last playing at professional level for the All Blacks last December.

The Crusaders face the Reds at 7.35pm this Saturday while in the second playoff, the Brumbies will host the Cheetahs at 6.10pm Sunday.
