MCG confirms its interest in visiting Fiji
The MCG met in Auckland yesterday and Fiji's Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola provided a presentation outlining the Fiji Governments views and also expressed a commitment to maintaining engagement with the Pacific Islands Forum, describing it as an important regional partner for Fiji=s return to parliamentary democracy.
Following the MCG meeting in Auckland, Dr. Sevele said in a statement that the Group has confirmed its interest of visiting Fiji to engage the full range of stakeholders in Fiji as they did twice in 2008.
Dr. Sevele said they welcomed the invitation from Ratu Inoke for such a visit at a time to be determined by mutual agreement.
The MCG Chair stressed that while significant differences remain between Fiji and the rest of the Forum membership, the Contact group provides an important mechanism to pursue a constructive two way dialogue with Fiji, aimed at resolving their differences and assisting in the return to full parliamentary democracy.
The Contact Group also highlighted the importance of Fiji establishing an inclusive and open political dialogue process in order to advance sustainable progress towards parliamentary democracy in Fiji.
