After reports that some Hotel and Resort workers were requested to go home based on low occupancy levels during the height of the flash floods, Tourism Fiji said temporary and casual workers are often relieved during this time of the year.
Tourism Fiji Chairman Patrick Wong said the low occupancy rate is linked to the impacts of the global financial crisis and was anticipated, however some workers are often sent home by the end of January as it is a slow period for the industry.
Wong added it is too early to say what direct impact the recent floods would have on the year end predictions for yield and visitor numbers.
One tourism operator had reported cancellations amounting to $2 million over 4 days during the flash floods.
