Local beef is safe to eat.

These are the words of Ministry of Primary Industries Spokesperson, Joe Uluilakeba on the meat from cows infected with Brucellosis and whether this is safe for consumption.

Uluilakeba said they do have the services of a doctor who specialises in meat helping them with the inspection and vetting process before the meat goes into the market.

Meanwhile, on the transmission of Brucellosis, Principal Vet Dr Robin Archari earlier clarified that Brucellosis cannot be passed from one human to another.

He said its symptoms if contracted from cattle are similar to that of the H1N1 flu. Archari also said people are able to contract the disease in a similar way to Leptospirosis and that is through open wounds.
