Lakovi, the story of how a Fijian boy living overseas comes back to Fiji to marry a young girl will now be transformed into a movie and a book.

The "Lakovi" - the first Fijian professional Drama was prepared by the University of the South Pacific's Larry Tomas and the Fijian Trust's heritage and Culture Specialist Apolonia Tamata.

Lakovi is a Fijian custom where the family of a boy approaches the family of a girl asking for her hand in marriage.

In the Drama, Setoki who is in the British army and his family approach the family of Adi Kivi'iwai and shows how culture is still alive in an urban setting.

Co writer Apolonia Tamata said that knowing that many Fijians nowadays love to spend their free time watching TV or rugby, they have decided to take this step, and produce the play for DVD.

Tamata added that this is a good way to preserve culture and also allows the younger generation a chance to learn tradition using technology.
