Let us not treat this Decree as another dead letter, as many are affected by it.
These are the words of Former High Court Judge Justice Nazhat Shameem to the participants of the Domestic Violence Decree Training held at the Government Training Centre in Nasese, who stressed that as signatories of the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, the Decree is long overdue in addressing the indirect discrimination of the laws against women.
Shameem said this Decree is important as women and children are the main victims of domestic violence.
She adds that the courts have also been guilty of an indirect discrimination against women in regards to the laws.
The workshop continues this afternoon, and ends tomorrow.
